Building block hypothesis (BBH)
attempt to explain the functioning of a (binary) GA based on the
schema theorem.
The BBH is based on the assumption that beneficial properties of a parent
are aggregated in
(relatively) small code blocks at several locations within the genome.
In the offspring they can be merged by
crossover.
Thus, the BBH suggests that the improved solution is assembled from
``partial solutions,'' the so-called building blocks (see also
genetic repair).
